IndyCar - a Technical and Not So Technical Overview

Prior to working in the tech industry, I was a race strategist, vehicle dynamicist, and data scientist for IndyCar and Champ Car racing teams.

Highlights of my racing career include:

  • Working as race strategist, vehicle dynamicist, and data scientist for over one hundred IndyCar races (including many Indianapolis 500 races), and for the winning team of the historic final Champ Car race in Long Beach, CA
  • Achieving numerous race wins and podium finishes as Andretti Autosport’s head of software, vehicle dynamics, and computer simulation
  • Contributing to the success of many notable IndyCar drivers and team owners, including:
    • Michael Andretti
    • Al Unser Jr.
    • Jimmy Vasser
    • Will Power
    • Danica Patrick
    • Tony Kanaan
    • Ryan-Hunter Reay

Here is a screencast and accompanying slides of a talk that I gave in Chicago (2016) on my background and experiences working in American professional motorsports (IndyCar and Champ Car in particular), and includes an overview and discussion of many technical and less technical aspects of IndyCar racing, and professional motorsports in general.

Topics covered include US open wheel racing history, the nuts and bolts of professional racing, race strategy, racecar performance optimization, car tunability and setup, data acquisition and analysis, how to maximize competitive advantage, and much more.

Enjoy!
